Teams enjoy the festive 2008 Softball Playoff atmosphere

All good things must come to an end.

The 2008 MCSN season ended Saturday in an all-day playoff extravaganza, made complete by free food and record-breaking temperatures.

First round play ended just as it began for the Living Stones: a loss against the Emoticons, this time 7-3. Of the coincidental bookend defeat against the Emoticons to cap off their season, Living Stones player Anne Marie Misovich commented, “I am into symmetry, and I designed this plan for the team during the pre-season. I am quite impressed with the finesse with which my teammates executed it. A couple of our losses were nail biters for me, because they would have thrown off that symmetry that I was trying to achieve, but in the end it all came out according to my plan.”

On a more serious note, Misovich noted, “It was a picture-perfect season ender. We were the first team of the regular season to hold them to a single-digit winning score…and Saturday's playoff game was an instant replay.”

The Living Stones managed to hold their defensive strategy through until the end, and in many spectators’ eyes came out on top.

In the following game, the Calvary nearly pulled off the upset of the season against the Moody Blues but fell just short 8-7. The Blues' victory was the closest margin this year.

“It's a 'moral' victory,” said Calvary manager Rob Tong. “And as Christians, aren't we looking to improve our morals?”

First-round play continued with the Carter Administration and the Barn Burners in the longest game…ever.

Both teams chased the win for 10 grueling innings, until the Carter Administration pulled ahead to finally clinch a spot in the second-round with four runs in the 10th inning to beat the Barn Burners 11-7.

“We were disappointed, but happy to get on to the hot dogs,” said Manager Pat Brown of the Barn Burners’ first-round loss.

Indeed, many teams were happier with their edible consolation prizes than they would have been with a trophy, so they said…

The Eagles closed out first-round play with a close win over Fire & Ice 13-12 in a rematch of last week.

Fire & Ice looked stacked going into the 1st inning, despite missing 3 of their strongest players, and had
phenomenal early play to back it up. They scored 9 quick runs and controlled the scoreboard 11-9 until the
6th inning when the Eagles pounced back with 3 additional runs to secure the lead at 12-11. Fire & Ice pushed back and tied the game in the 7th, but the Eagles managed a final run with 2 outs in the bottom of the seventh on a controversial call to win in dramatic fashion.

The difficult loss did not diminish the season for Fire & Ice, however.

“Despite our 4-7 final record, I had an absolute blast and was probably my favorite year of Moody Softball to date,” said Manager Mat Smith.

After their marathon first game, the Carter Administration met the Emoticons to open second-round play but the Emoticons promptly sent them back to the hot dog table, winning 12-8.

“I think the grueling nature of our 10-inning classic took its toll on us in the 2nd game as we had two leg injuries to our guys by the end of that game,” said Assistant To The Manager Bill Van Tuinen. “Hats off to the Emoticons though…they were definitely one of the top 3 teams in the league for most of the season.”

Sportsmanship—it’s what MCSN is all about.

Second-round play concluded with the Moody Blues beating the Eagles by the same 12-8 score as the other second-round game. The Blues took no chances with the Eagles' Andrew Peterson, walking him a league-record three times en route to the victory.

As teams were picked off in first and second round play, two of MCSN fans’ favorite picks steadily rose to the top. The Moody Blues met the Emoticons in a highly anticipated Championship game. Favoring either team was a hotly disputed topic leading up to the match, but the Emotions well-oiled softball machine kept runners moving through the bases like clockwork, and they managed to tick off enough runs to clinch the Championship 7-4.

“The only thing that I want to say is that this was a great season!!" said Emoticons manager Anthony Halpin in his victory speech. "We won the playoffs with all 13 of our active players. It was fun to have the full roster and see everyone contribute to our victories. It was fun this summer and I'm already looking forward to next year.”

Aren’t we all Anthony? Aren’t we all.
