Soggy Week 1 recap

Tue, Jun 8, 2010

The 2010 season began under grey, threatening skies but that did not deter Global Warming and the Lion’s Den from getting out on the field early for some warm-ups. All gathered at Beckman Field as a scheduling conflict prevented the use of Clarendon Park.

Lion’s Den (0-1) started the game off well, shutting out Global Warming bats in the first inning and jumping out to a 3-0 lead at the end of the first inning with some strong hitting and solid pitching. Reflecting the close nature of the game, Global Warming took the lead with four runs in the 2nd inning, only to have the Lion's Den re-take the lead at 6-4 after three innings. After Lion's Den padded the lead with another un in the 5th inning, Global Warming caught up in the 6th inning by scoring an inning-maximum 5 runs before getting any outs, including a 3-run home run by Anthony Halpin, playing his first game not as a manager. Lion's Den tacked on another run in the bottom of the 7th, but couldn't pull off the game-tying run, allowing Global Warming to squeak by with a 9-8 win.

“I hope this proves that Global Warming is for real,” said Ovi Tisler, rookie manager of Global Warming (1-0). “I hope this quiets all those Global Warming deniers out there. You can deny at your own peril, but when we bring the heat, it’ll be an Inconvenient Truth for your team!”

After a close first game of the season, the weather continued to look promising as El Fuego and Tsunami stepped out on the field.

The game started well for Tsunami (0-1) who took a 6-1 lead going into the bottom of the 4th and looked strong. But it didn’t last as El Fuego made a comeback with 11 runs in the final four innings, including the game-winner in the bottom of the 7th inning just as the rain began to pour. Despite the growing intensity of the weather, the teams were able to make it to the end, with El Fuego (1-0) winning 12-11.

“Our team stuck together and kept playing hard until the winning run was scored,” said Stephen Hage, rookie
manager of El Fuego.

- Global Warming's Ovi Tisler warning for other teams

Sam Baturoni, rookie manager of Tsunami had this to say about the final outcome: “True to our name, I called for a Tsunami to arrive at Beckman Field so that the game would be called off while we still had the lead. However, it was too little, too late.”

The morning was an exciting one with two very close games but could not continue due to the weather. The second two games of the day were cancelled and will be rescheduled later in the season.

Hopes for the rest of the season were communicated best by Hage: “I hope we walk away from the
season with a championship in tow but also with deeper relationships with one another.”
